Known as Sac-Town, the capital of California replaced the previous state's capital, San Jose, in 1879. Since the beginning, Sacramento has always been in the center of the state's history. For example, Sacramento was the western end of the Pony Express and a terminus to the First Transcontinental Railroad (aka the Pacific Railroad) – financed by the Big Four: Mark Hopkins, Charles Crocker, Colis P. Huntington, and Leland Stanford. Sacramento has always been a vital city.

During the mid 19th-century, the city was destroyed by horrible floods from the surrounding rivers.
